The year where we started to hear about the Euro, Travel Midland Metro enters public service running from Wolverhampton to Birmingham Snow Hill. Family Guy comes to our TV screens and Britney Spears releases her debut album 'Baby One More Time' it went on to sell 26million copies.The minimum wage was introduced, set at £3.60 an hour for workers over 21, and £3 for workers under 21. Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones get married and there are honours for Alex Ferguson and newsreader Trevor McDonald.

 
 

Music

We watched Elton John appearing as himself in an episode of The Simpsons. Irish girl band B*Witched score their fourth consecutive #1 with Blame It On The Weatherman. Christina Aguilera released her debut album 'Genie in a Bottle' which went to number one and The Spice Girls tour with their Christmas in Spiceworld Tour. 

 

Movies

Over £50million was made at the box office with the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. We went to see great animated movies The Iron Giant, Toy Story 2 and South Park: Bigger and Keanu Reeves starred in The Matrix and we can't forget Hugh grant and Julia Roberts in Notting Hill.
 
 

 

TV

On the Street corner shop owner Alf Roberts dies of a heart attack, just one month before the real-life death of Bryan Mosley, we see the arrival of Nick Jr and after 32 years we saw the end of News at Ten only for it to return in 2001. Holby City was first seen on our screens in this year along with Loose Women and Grand Designs but we did see the end of 2 Point 4 Children, Play Your Cards Right and Rab C. Newbitt.
